Client Objectives

The primary goal was to create a stimulating, hands-on outdoor resource that would:

• Support the sensory and developmental needs of students with varying abilities
• Encourage imaginative play, teamwork, and independent learning
• Be built to withstand regular use and all-weather conditions
• Align with the school's safety standards and accessibility requirements

Scope of Works

Our end-to-end service included:

• Consultation with staff to tailor the design for student engagement and accessibility
• Design and CAD development of a bespoke mud kitchen with removable bowls, play surfaces, and safe storage
• Manufacture of the kitchen and raised planters using durable, child-safe materials
• On-site installation, timed to avoid disruption to the school

Challenges

• User-specific design needs: The mud kitchen needed to be accessible and engaging for a wide age and ability range
• Durability requirements: Materials had to be weatherproof and resilient to frequent, hands-on use
• Tight timeline: Completion was required before term began

Solutions

• Collaborative design process: We worked closely with teaching staff to understand student needs and design features accordingly
• Robust construction: The kitchen and planters were constructed from treated timber, built to resist wear and rot
• Streamlined scheduling: The works were scheduled during school holidays to avoid any disruption to the school.

Results

The finished mud kitchen and planters were a huge success with both staff and students. The space is now used daily for:
